The temple of Goddess Kali at Shimla, popularly known as Shimla Kali Bari is situated at a distance of 1 km from the Mall and lies past the General Post Office and the deconsecrated church of St. Andrew (now a wing of the State Library). The temple is dedicated to goddess Kali and holds the original stone image of the goddess ‘Shyamala’, after whom the town of Shimla got its name. The deity was previously located in Jakhu Hill; the British brought it to this new site and the temple was built in 1845.
Major festivals like Durga Puja, Shivratri and Kali Puja are also being organized in the Kali Bari complex. So anybody travelling to Shimla during these festivals can visit the temple complex and take part in the celebrations.
The Shimla Kali Bari is situated at a height of 2,100 m above sea level and from within its premises, one can enjoy a grand view of the Shimla town along with the distant snow covered mountains.
The temple is run by a trustee consisting mostly of local Bengali members. Accommodation facilities are available in the temple complex. Presently there are 64 rooms, all with attached baths. The tariff for a 3 bedded room with attach bath is Rs. 300 per day. During peak tourism season i.e. from April to June and from mid-September to early November, it is hard to get a booking; all pre-booked by Bengali tourists.

Presently, Shimla Kali Bari does not have online booking facilities. They have a website, however it is very basic and all features are not available. The most convenient way to book an accommodation in Shimla Kali Bari is through e-mail. Once confirmation is received from the temple authorities about the availability of rooms, the advance amount needs to be deposited to their bank account. The scanned copy of the deposit slip has to be mailed further, and the original needs to be shown at the time of check-in.

Canteen Facilities at Shimla Kali Bari
Canteen facilities are available in Shimla Kali Bari complex for the people staying there, as well as for the outsiders. Lunch and Dinner are being served at additional costs from 12 pm to 2.30 pm and from 7.30 pm till 10 pm. Visitors have to buy coupons in advance from the Canteen authorities and submit those when the food is being served to them.
