Naldehra, Himachal Pradesh

Naldehra is one of the most popular excursions from Shimla and is a full-fledged destination in its own right. Set under a thicket of deodar trees and with a magnificent view of the valley below, the Naldehra spur extends from the Kufri hill. This also has one of the most picturesque golf courses in the country. The golf course was designed by the British Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon (1899-1904). He fell in love with the spot and would abandon the resplendent Viceregal Lodge in town and camp in the cedar woods of Naldehra for weeks on end – communicating with his office and sending messages that controlled one-fifth of the human race by heliograph. His youngest daughter, Alexandra was given ‘Naldera’ as her middle name. The beauty of Naldehra still endures and apart from golf, this offers walk, picnic spots and horse rides. The Satluj valley is close by, at Tattapani and has white-water rafting and hot springs. The name Naldehra probably comes from the temple of Nag Devta, the serpent deity whose temple is located on the links.
